An abandoned former printing space serves as the new headquarters and showroom for the designer of a modern line of classically inspired furniture. Layers of former neglect, renovation and repair are peeled away to reveal an ideal backdrop of industrial purity and restraint. The original floor, a hazardous patchwork of sloping wood and steel plates, is made seamless with a poured high gloss cement/epoxy mix. On top of this, two platforms, one L-shaped and one U-shaped, are positioned to create abstract sites for compositional flexibility. Back offices are spare and clean, punctuated with the warmth of macassar ebony cabinetwork, white laminate work surfaces, and concealed, continuous artificial light....more
